Planet Earth is a precious place in the universe in which species, populations, and diverse cultures of all kinds have called home for millions of years. Nevertheless, many uncaring people take advantage of this concept of peace and unity between the earth and its inhabitants and decide to destroy the Earth anyways. Wendell Berry’s Speech against the State Government is a cry of help to an audience; in doing so, he hopes that they may in turn become aware of the seriousness that this heartless activity breeds and simultaneously that we as Americans must discontinue the passive attitude towards the obliteration of our planet and exploit civil disobedience. I strongly agree with his standpoint because a violent battle won is an opportunity for a non violent battle lost. Although Wendell’s frustration is evident, he, by no means, is fighting this battle unaccompanied.
Keeping both audiences in mind when speaking on consideration towards pollution:
If you take seriously the knowledge of humans are capable of neighborliness and caretaking, are capable of caring well for the earth for the earth’s own sake and for the sake of their neighbors now and yet to come, and if you know that according to our greatest teachers this neighborliness is expected to us, then you will grieve in knowing that we humans are destroying the earth (Berry 1).
With this in mind, those who have just tuned in start to get a comprehensible understanding of Berry’s attitude towards human involvement in both neighboring and foreign communities; the “putrid lump that will gag you…”, pertaining to the allowance by the government itself to create such disorder, must be avoided at all costs. I find making a contribution to society can be easy if you put a solid effort in; this is one point Lanes is motivated to getting across to all listening.
